Take Back The Beep

David Pogue over at the New York Times has started a campaign called “Take Back The Beep“. His main complaint is that all the major cell phone providers (Sprint, Verison, T-Mobile and AT&T) have these long messages like

At the tone, please record your message. When you have finished recording, you may hang up, or press 1 for more options. To leave a callback number, press 5

It’s 2009 and most of us know this information pretty well. Same goes for the messages you here when you check your own voicemail. The message is an annoying time waster for the user and lets the cell phone companies charge you extra. Over a year of cell phone usage, you’ve wasted a lot of time listening to this message again and again, and have been charged by the phone companies to hear it.
