By dpearson

Heard about a new video aggregation site called Mag.ma. Looks like you can import from YouTube, BoingBoing, CollegeHumor, Digg, Vimeo and plenty of other places. I set up an account with a channel. Need to find a way to bring over all my YouTube Channel Favorites to Mag.ma

Back To School Time

By dpearson

School starts on Monday, August 24th at Saint Paul College.

Thought I’d post some of the main announcements and updates here so I don’t forget ‘em.

  • MAC LAB
  • Mac Lab at SPC

Just finished getting our Mac Lab up on the fourth floor configured to dual boot Mac OS X and Windows XP. We will also be having open lab hours for Fall Semester on Tuesdays and Thursday from 3 to 5.

  • SkyDrive
  • Students can get up to 25GB of free storage space using Skydrive through Microsoft. Students need to sign up using their new student email account. Very handy place to store homework files, plus any photo/music/video files you want to access from anywhere in the world.

  • Online Orientation
  • Enrollment services put together a great Online Orientation Presentation. Strongly recommended for students starting their first semester at SPC.

  • D2L Signup
  • I plan on using Desire 2 Learn for some of my classes this semester. To initially sign up, click on tinyurl.com/spcd2l

  • New Student Emails
  • Students will need to migrate from

    username@student.saintpaul.edu to username@my.saintpaul.edu

by September 30th. The old email account will quit working on October 1st.

  • Dinner Theater
  • Last but not least, SPC is putting on a theatrical production in cooperation with the culinary arts program this school year. It’s the first time the SPC theater has been used since the early 70′s. Auditions for “Our Town” will be during the first month of Fall Semester and the dinner and a play production is scheduled for April 16 and 17 this spring.

Take Back The Beep

By dpearson

David Pogue over at the New York Times has started a campaign called “Take Back The Beep“. His main complaint is that all the major cell phone providers (Sprint, Verison, T-Mobile and AT&T) have these long messages like

At the tone, please record your message. When you have finished recording, you may hang up, or press 1 for more options. To leave a callback number, press 5

It’s 2009 and most of us know this information pretty well. Same goes for the messages you here when you check your own voicemail. The message is an annoying time waster for the user and lets the cell phone companies charge you extra. Over a year of cell phone usage, you’ve wasted a lot of time listening to this message again and again, and have been charged by the phone companies to hear it.

If you want to let your cell phone provider know you’re unhappy with this, you can contact them below:

Web Developer Toolbar Update

By dpearson

Just saw that version 1.1.8 of the Chris Pederick Web Developer Toolbar was released. Was trying to run a previous version under Firefox 3.5 but had some problems. Looks like this works just fine. This is a must have for web developers and designers. One quick note, it was easier to install directly from the Chris Pederick website than through the Firefox Add-On option.

I Love Shader!

By dpearson

Like a lot of people, I’ve been less than enthusiastic about migrating to Vista. One of the issues I had was that the old Rehan FX package for Windows Movie Maker didn’t work in Vista. Well, Shader is here and works like a charm. You can install it for free and play with it for 15 days. After that time, certain features still work but you’ll need to pay $15 to continue to get the complete functionality, definitely worth it in my opinion. I still haven’t had a chance to play with the chromakey features but they look like fun. In addition, some great PIP and gradient effects/transitions are included.

Shader can be found on the Rehan FX website. Patrick Leabo has added a ton of extras to compliment Shader that are all free. His website contains tons of transitions, along with demo videos on Vimeo for each. Check it out when you have time.
